THE HIKE

At 1,373 feet, Sargent Mountain is the second highest in Acadia National Park, dominating the area between Jordan Pond and Somes Sound. Numerous trails and carriage roads explore its varied topography. This hike hits most of the highlights on Sargent Mountain.

The Giant Slide Trail climbs away from the road and crosses open ledges before crossing the first carriage road. After that the trail climbs through a narrow ravine beside a stream. The trail passes numerous waterfalls. This section holds snow and ice late into the spring. Just past the junction with the Sargent Northwest Trail is the Giant Slide—a slab of rock leaning against the mountainside. The trail passes through the dark, narrow cleft between the slab and the ravine.

The climb from the slide to Sargent Mountain’s open summit is steady and increasingly open. You have fine views of almost all of Mount Desert Island and the surrounding land and waters. The summit itself is wide and relatively flat, sloping gently south toward the sea. This is one of the most reliable places in Maine to see snowy owls in the winter.
